Who else has trouble making friends?
by new light inhaven't posted here in a while, but i"ve been out now almost three years.
just looking to hear from others who have had trouble making friends due to a childhood of jw antisocialism toward the real world.
it's really starting to piss me off that i still keep people at a distance and do things to nip any new friendships at the bud when it gets that far.

Has anyone had any success in getting past this stage? Or you can just sound off about your own difficulty in this area!

TESTING the results of two different ways of thinking
by Terry inmankind has had a pretty good track record of tackling the problems of life on earth.
different folks have tried different strokes.
you might say that life has been the crucible for testing an idea as to efficacy and the legacy of any idea is how well it worked.. .

Tetrapod: How could I possibly prove to you materially my claims that exist in the world of thought? Even if the thoughts led to a material end that could be measured and examined in a lab, the source of said thoughts would still be in question. Personal experience is the only guide here, and I can't help but think that abject materialists choose to see the world the way they do.
I don't claim to be special or "chosen" in any way. I don't attend religious services or read any literature that would sway my opinion on this matter. I don't believe in or care about an afterlife. I simply was in a tough spot in life and decided "What the hay, I'll give it a shot" and I prayed. Not for a miracle or some sign of god's existence, just for a little strength and peace of mind and, lo and behold, I got it, and I continue to receive benefits, not in a material way (of course I don't ask), but in the way of insights that never would have occurred to me otherwise. I'm sure you're having a good laugh, as I would have not too long ago, but that's your right.

The affects of prayer are not exactly placebo-like. Prayer offers the faithful person a hope, a sense of optimism that things will improve. The adjustment in the person's state of mind is achieved not by some external spirit forct but by the person by focussing their thoughts on their own hope that God will help them.
Sounds to me like a perfect example of the placebo effect, which I stated would not fool me. I know about the effects of positive and negative thinking, and my statements about prayer hve nothing to do with either. After praying, thoughts occur that absolutely do seem to come from an external source.
I completely agree with your statements about thinking oneself well, and the opposite, but I assure you that my experience with praying is in another class.

Death Wish III starring Charles Bronson. I just saw it on HBO the other day (well, at least part of it) and it made me forget every bad movie I've seen. The actors sound like they are reading the script while sitting on a toilet after a triple dose of Ex-Lax. Even the camera man was horrible. In one scene Bronson is showing his friend a bullet he had just filled by hand. The subject of the scene is the bullet, and the camera never even focuses on it. It just lies in the foreground all fuzzy while the moron in the back steals the shot looking at the bullet. Inspirationally bad.

Hi, Terry. While I admire your intelligence and mastery of the language, I do feel you are quite biased in your thinking on this matter. It seems that you are still rebounding from the JW experience and are unable to even dip a toe into the waters of "mysticism", if it must be labeled as such. If you are going to label prayer as a "meaningless and time-wasting ritual" you should at least give it a fair shot and try it now that you have developed your own thinking power and healthy skepticism, if you have not already done so. If you have, then please accept my apologies.
I'm not saying "you'll be amazed" or anything else prematurely, but I can say that, in my own personal experience, the results have forced me to question my previously iron dismissal of the value of prayer. I have no reason to believe I would be fooled by a "placebo effect", nor do I believe that simply saying things causes them to happen. I am saying that in the last two months or so since starting to pray, I have seen dramatic effects in ways that really make me sit down and rethink my atheism. Assuming there is a being that answers prayers, it would naturally follow that you would receive all the confirmation you need to satisfy your intellect, should you decide to ask.

Advantages to being a JW
by MGonzales ini'd say that the biggest advantage of being a jw is that you learn the bible.
growing up a jw (never baptized), i had many friends (mostly catholic) who didn't even know where most books of the bible were even located.
jws really do learn and study the bible and this knowledge becomes very helpful once you start looking at the bible more objectively and not with wts binders.

Excellent point, Mark, and welcome to the forum. We were exposed to the bible much more than most. Reading the bible really debunks the Jehovah myth on its own, or at least makes Jehovah look like a real a$$hole and if it weren't that I'd probably still be trapped in some tired fairy tale.

I like to change mine often, using my own photographs. This one was shot at a flower show we went to last weekend. The flowers were not very exotic, but it was nice to see them so early in the year (in a greenhouse).
